I have so much to show and tell but I won´t be sharing it all in this one post. More updates will follow if my computer will cooperate with me (still in the process of getting a new one!). The biggest news is that I sold Nekome. As much as I love the sculpt, I came to the conclusion that the SD-size is not for me. They are way too big and heavy for my hands and for that reason it was off-putting to even look at her. I am more comfortable with the smaller dolls and from now on anything bigger than 40 cm is definitely a no-no.
I am also considering selling my Blythe Pumpkin. She is nice, but I am not doing much with her after all. Not sure about what to do yet but my main focus and interest at the moment is the greenhouse diorama. My hands are perfectly full with that and after it´s finished, I can start learning how to take pretty pictures of Lyra in her own environment.
However, I do have plans on getting one new doll as a combined Christmas/ birthday present for myself. Again, I will not tell you what it might be but it´s a doll I have loved from the first days of my doll hobby.

Some random updates: I re-did Stella´s faceup and she got an exquisite knitted wool cardigan from Junipa.
The doll was super dirty, had awful old faceup, was desperately in a need of new strings and had a broken string hook in the paw.

First I took the poor thing apart and gave him a good bath. The old faceup was very tightly stuck and it took me several hours to rub until the whole thing was squeaky clean and bright white again.

With a help of a Dremel I removed the stem that had left from the broken hook and drilled a hole for a new metallic hook. This is how the resin hook normally looks like:

...And this is how I repaired the broken one:

After these were done, I started the painting by adding the base coats with Army Painter and from there continued as usual until I was satisfied with the result. Last I restrung him with new cords. The friend wanted him to have purple scales and silver horns, spikes and claws. Here is how he turned out:
Last weekend I had a chance to meet my new friend, Caketown´s Irene, in person when she came to visit Finland. She was not the only new acquaintance to me at that day because also Senja, Spica and Sofia joined the meeting, whom I hadn´t met before. But what a lovely gals they all turned out to be!

At first we went to a nice coffee house to get to know each other and to share the souvenirs. Because Irene lives in China, she has easy access to all the goodies at Taobao, so we all had asked Irene to work as our agent for ordering some doll stuff from there. I must admit I feel a little guilty for asking her to drag all those stuff all the way from China but then again, I would have done exactly the same for her if she asked me to get something from Finland. To thank her for her kindness and for her efforts I bought her three big chocolate bars from a brand Fazer - each one with different flavour. And because I had quite heavy bag and also my little doggy with me, I had no hands to take my camera along, so unfortunately no pictures of the meet itself, sorry. It would be so nice to have a personal photographer with me to do all the job. ;)

But to the Taobao order, I wanted more Blythe size clothes for Pumpkin and some props too. Here is the whole haul in one picture + some extra gifts Irene gave to me. How very sweet of her!

The bike was maybe one of my most expected item from the haul. It´s 1/6 scale and perfect for Blythes. The details are beautiful.

And here´s all the extras Irene generously added to my batch. Thank you dear!

Stickers, 1/6 scale cat overalls, small cat mirror, Hello Kitty pen, tiny doll props etc.

Irene didn´t forget Nekome either! Just look at this pretty dress set:

As if all the previous goodies weren´t enough, I was handed with these awesome small furnitures. They are originally made for Barbie dolls and for that reason a little bit too small for Lyra, but works better for Pumpkin. However, I have planned to make some modifications to them so that they could be used in Lyra´s greenhouse.

After spending a good while at the coffee house, we decided to stretch our legs and walk to visit two small shops nearby (a Pullip doll and accessories shop Kilala and anime/ manga/ Japan merchandise selling Luca). Then it was time for me to part from the group but oh boy I enjoyed this meeting. I am very grateful I got to know all these wonderful new friends and big thanks to Irene from the bottom of my heart. I hope we can stay in touch also in the future. Friends just are the best aren´t they?

I will make a post where all the clothes are sported by their respectful owners and I promise to make that soon. I´ve been shamefully slow with updating my blog and that is purely because of my nine-years-old ancient computer. I really must get a new one with more power to run all the image programs and such.

Have a lovely day and see you soon!Rosie http://www.blogger.com/profile/06852654561098749885noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-125254971753993271.post-8376840175821605712016-04-28T15:30:00.001+03:002016-05-04T00:19:19.284+03:00Trade with FaeryKissI had an amazing opportunity to make my first trade with FaeryKiss´s Krista. She made a shirt for my Lyra and I did props for her future-to-be -doll. The character of hers will be a witch and the model Feeple 60 doll from the company CP/ Fairyland.

I wanted to have a nice mori-style shirt for Lyra and I specifically asked if Krista could do the sleeves with straps for two length options and again Krista did amazing job! Let the pictures speak for themselves:

This trade was so much fun to make and I am super grateful to Krista that she wanted to do this with me. I think trades are excellent thing because it enables people to use their creative skills to have something that either can´t or don´t know how to do by themselves, or if they simply don´t have the money to purchase the goods they´d need. Many times I have had this problem: I would love to get something for my dolls but lack the money. But what I usually do have more than money is plenty of time, skills and passion to make props. So if I could have all the things in the world by just making doll props, I´d be dirty rich let me say!
So, in a way by trades you can "make" yourself things that you can´t make by making things you can. Haha, get it? Anyways, I wish trades would become more common in the doll community. Hooray for the creativity!Rosie http://www.blogger.com/profile/06852654561098749885noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-125254971753993271.post-74060894270246237882016-03-24T23:54:00.001+02:002016-03-24T23:56:00.270+02:00Lyra´s outfitsI haven´t yet introduced my Lyra properly on pictures mainly because she hasn´t had any clothing to fit her personality and style, and generally I don´t like to take pictures of a doll that´s unfinished. However, this has now changed.

As much as I love and live for crafting, miniature sewing is one of those things that makes me absolutely crazy! Learning new skills is wonderful, but honestly I have given up with that area. The numerous times I have tried to sew something for my dolls the results have always been cursing, broken needles, holes in the fabric and so on. To spear myself from despair, I have liberated myself and outsourced it to the people who can master it better than I ever could. I highly appreciate those who can sew such a tiny pieces of clothes as I know how effing hard it can be!

So I met a talented seamstress at our little Christmas meeting back in December. As I looked the incredibly small and detailed doll clothes she had made, I asked if she could make something for me too. I had planned a mori-style outfit for Lyra and her choices of fabrics and patterns were quite similar to my preferences.
The person I am talking about is Krista Salama, an Etsy seller with a shop named FaeryKiss. Krista sells both ready-made clothes as well as takes commissions. Soon after our meeting we started messaging about the details for the outfit. I found a spot-on picture of a mori girl with a beautiful outfit and asked Krista to use it as a guide for my commission. But differing from the reference picture, I wanted the loose undershirt to be natural white with long sleeves and wanted to leave the green vest off. It seems to be pretty simply constructed, so I may be able to sew it by myself and the belt is easy piece of cake. Also I already had the cute socks which I ordered earlier from the CaramelBJD -shop, so there was no need for new tights or socks.

The making of the clothes took quite a while because there was many little details I wanted to discuss about before making final decisions. Christmas and the holiday season was another reason for slowing the process generally, but I wasn´t in a hurry and didn´t mind that at all. I like to give the artist all the time she needs to make my piece as good as possible without having the feeling of being rushed.
Now when all the pieces are ready, I am very impressed with the result even though it wasn´t a surprise after seeing the other pieces she had made previously. The quality is impeccable with the small but so straight sewing lines and even smaller pleats and buttons. The materials have authentic feel and look.
According to this transaction with Krista I am recommending her creations to anyone who wants to have professionally made doll clothes. She is great to communicate with and because she has graduated as a seamstress and making clothes is her full time job, she really knows all the aspects of the art of tailoring. We are definitely not speaking of an amateur here that´s for sure!

Now let´s see how the outfit came out:

The socks are from CaramelBJD and the shoes from eBay

The main outfit includes four pieces: bloomers, petticoat, dress and a shirt.
To make the outfit more versatile, a separate T-shirt was made as well. This is just basic piece, but works nicely under the dress for warmer summer days:

And when the chilly autumn breeze is blowing, what would be more nicer than to add a hand knitted cardigan with matching legwarmers to the ensemble:

The knitted pieces are commissioned from another talented Finnish artist from Etsy called Junipa aka JuniDoll. The other craft I totally suck is - surprise, surprise - knitting. I have a soft spot for knits maybe just for that reason!
I contacted Junipa and she happily made the cardigan and the legwarmers according to my instructions. To the same batch I asked her to make a pair of cool Bumpy -leggings, of which I had seen a picture earlier while gazing her earlier creations in her shop. I have to figure out some nice outfit to go with the woolen leggings so I have no pictures of Lyra wearing them yet, but hopefully I´ll have something to show you sometime soon. When I got my order after a few weeks, I was happily surprised with a small gift of a chain with keys. So adorable! The yarn of the cardigan and leggings is mainly very soft alpaca and the leggings are thin sheep wool. The tiny stitches are just the right scale for dolls. Gotta love into bits!

I can warmly recommend Junipa´s knitted wonders to you all! The ones who are just as inept in knitting as I am, Junipa´s small wonders are pure joy to look and touch. Or even if you can knit, the scale is so small that even the most enthusiastic knitters might give up in front of the challenge, but not Junipa. I love how many super talented crafters we have within this doll hobby and it warms my heart that I can support them by purchasing things they have made or commissioning them.

Big thanks to both FaeryKiss and Junipa!

I could say that this was Lyra´s first proper debut as a complete character. I am very happy how she has bloomed to be just like I always imagined her to be right from the beginning. Now I have to get the diorama ready so that I can start taking proper photos of her in the environment she belongs.

From left: a pen/ paintbrush/ tool storing roll case, 1/6 sized couch (really a jewelry box!), set of paintbrushes, YoSD khaki-green skirt, YoSD polka dot capri leggings, 1/6 doll stand, Blythe eyeglasses (gold and black frames), Blythe sunglasses (Ray Ban style) and 1/6 sized carrying bag.

I purchased the clothes mainly for Lyra, but they look very small and will probably fit better on Pumpkin. Haven´t tried them on yet, though.
The sales pictures of this couch showed it only two-tone grey, but afterwards I discovered it to be actually glittery grey! Not a big deal but I´d preferred it without glitter. Luckily the sparkle doesn´t jump in to your eyes too much (even though it does exactly just that in this picture!):
The hair was crazy long and very difficult to keep untangled, so I gathered my courage and shorten it a bit for starters. I have actually talked to my local hairdresser to cut it to the final length and she was willing to help me. It turned out that she likes dolls very much too, and she has her own small collection of antique ones. What a coincidence! Naturally I´ll give you a full report about our trip to beauty salon when the time comes. ;)
I have been waiting for this day for so long. Of course I could´ve got it done sooner but then again, what´s the rush anyway. I like to concentrate on small details and making things as pretty as possible.

Notice here the table on which it is placed. I have been doing some furniture changes in my flat and the oak cupboard was moved to the other side of the room. This little table is more suitable for the diorama because it is much lower than the cupboard and thus easier to display and above all - to see and more closely to look the set.
The corner supporters will be painted to blend in the outside wall and all the raw edges will be getting moldings to finish the look, but boy I am happy. That´s it for now. I have been much more active on Instagram mainly because it´s so much easier to post quick pics there than on Blogger. If you are keen to see things quicker than what I post here on Blogger, I suggest you to head on to the IG.

First of all, I have a new doll!
I have been infected by the Blythe fever that´s going on amongst the doll people. It´s funny that a few while ago I absolutely disliked Blythes because of their super disproportionate body. The head is humongous and at first the dolls seemed grotesque to me. They have this eye mechanism which allows them to change gaze when pulled from a string from the back of their heads. The mechanism was intimidating as I watched some customizing videos from Youtube where the head was opened and the whole thing was revealed. But you know, when I started to see videos, photos and other postings of them, I slowly started to like them, especially the customized ones. And there I was, ordering my first!
The things that really appeals to me with these dolls are first of all the price. You can find a factory Blythe (no clothes, just plain doll with hair and make up) as low price as 40 $, so way much cheaper than BJD´s. They are more durable than resin dolls because Blythes were originally made as children´s toys so they had to be made to last also a bit rougher plays. You can customize them in a million ways just like BJD´s from changing eye chips, making or buying wigs, rooting hair by your self, carving and painting face, etc. They are small enough to carry where ever you please for photo shoots, and if you happen to brake something, you can buy replacement parts cheaply and easily from many various web shops.

As much as I love my resin BJD´s, they are fragile, heavy and expensive and therefore not something I want to ruin by carrying here and there in public. I wanted to have a small, cheap doll which I could take with me for example on a weekend trip and take funny snap shots of it doing everyday things. The big head and eyes also allows them to have lots of character regardless the small size (a bit like a caricature drawings have).

So I went and chose my first Blythe girl with long golden brown hair. I originally wanted to have short haired doll, but since there wasn´t the colour I wished, I decided to go with long and cut it to short afterwards (there was no differences in the prices regardless of the hair lenght).
Then started the customizing. First was the most difficult part, aka "destruction", which means taking the whole doll apart. Blythe´s have many small different parts inside their heads because of the eye mechanism. I honestly was super nervous to start this phase! After watching numerous Youtube videos and reading tutorials about the process I had gained enough courage to begin. After all everything went well and I didn´t brake anything. Here you can see pictures of the process (sorry for the quality in some of the pictures! They were taken with my phone for Instagram):
What came to the faceup, I wanted her to look natural and simple. For some reason Blythe´s usually don´t have any eyebrows, which I found a bit weird, and for that reason I gave my girl a pair. I like how she turned out, but I must say that this will be the first and the last Blythe I´m going to own. I absolutely love her but for me there is too much little nibs and nobs to deal with and too many parts to brake or loose. I enjoy the result I managed to achieve but to be honest, I did not enjoy the process at all. I was simply too afraid to brake something or generally do something wrong! Compared to Blythe´s, resin BJD´s are so easy to handle and above all, change eyes. And because I find myself to be less is more -kind of a person, owning too many dolls is the deal braker to me. I want to have just a small collection.

My Blythe still needs some hair styling and cutting, and I haven´t even decided her name yet but all that will come sooner or later. Right now I will enjoy her like this while spending time with her to get to know who she really is.

This is as far as I have got for now. One of the trickiest part is still to come, the window that is. I would like to get a real glass on it but I´m afraid it will be very difficult to find in a correct size. Of course I could go and get that piece of glass cut to size in some place but I bet it would cost a fortune. Maybe I have to settle on a plexiglass instead of a real one. But we`ll see.Rosie http://www.blogger.com/profile/06852654561098749885noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-125254971753993271.post-65651541539019975852016-01-05T14:50:00.000+02:002016-01-05T14:55:38.757+02:00A new year and some dolly thoughts

Christmas was and went, the year 2015 has turned into 2016 and I´ve not updated anything since our little Christmas dolly meeting. Time goes by so fast! Of course I was going to do a Christmas photoshoot, but something always came and interrupted my plans, so - no pictures. Also sadly the darkness, the rain and the lack of snow stole my entire Christmas spirit away anyway. I had a nice time, but something was definitely missing. :/

Anyhow since it is a whole new year now, I want to wrap the old up and tell about my future plans.
The year 2015 was my first doll year after my 5 year brake within this hobby. I was very surprised how hard the excitement and inspiration hit me again after such a long time!

Things I achieved:
* I bought two dolls and sold one.
* I started making the diorama + crafted little things in it.
* Purchased new clothes and shoes.
* Commissioned a clothing set for Lyra from Etsy (still under making).
* Purchased doll stands for all of my bigger dolls (review coming soon).
* Made my first faceups for others than my own dolls and did my first customisations/ repairs for a BJD (more about those later on!).
* Made many new doll friends and participated on several meetings.
* Purchased a light tent for photographing. It´s been on my wish list ever since I purchased my first digital camera back in 2010. The tent has been ordered and still on delivery, but hopefully coming soon.

My future plans for the year 2016 are:
* To continue and finish the diorama.
* Learn to take better photos and generally be more active on that area.
* Purchase a doll I´ve been drooling (still on the desk of the doll artist, but according to her, soon to be ready for a perorder!).
* Get to know my only SD girl better and create her more complete personality.

...And the biggest plan of the year is:

* To participate the Ldoll festival on Lyon, France.
Nothing is certain yet but I would really, really like to go there. I have never visited any BJD convention before and it makes it even more tempting that it´s inside EU and not too far away from Finland either. I wouln´t dare to travel alone but we have already had some discussions about going there as a group with some doll people on Facebook. Let´s see how the things turn out.

Overall I´d say 2015 was a pretty good and productive year. The new plans are pretty exciting too and I hope you all will have just as exciting times ahead as I do.

On November I made an order on Etsy shop called CaramelBJDcom. They sell doll socks and clothing with awesome prints and they had a 1st year anniversary sale coming up. I had been admiring their items for a while and when I heard about the birthday sale, I had to take advantage of that.

I purchased three pairs of socks for Lyra, four pairs for Stella and also jeans and a shirt for her. All of the items were pre-order stuff so I had to wait for a while for them to be made. The shipping took a bit longer of what I was expecting but never the less, everything was fine once it came. All of the clothes were packed nicely and nothing was missing. The quality is wonderful! Let´s see what I got:
All of the sock fits with no complaining and look good. Some of the pictures on their shop are a bit lighter or darker of what the products actually are but nothing so drastic that you´d be disappointed. Overall the colours are very vivid. My experience of this Etsy seller is nothing but very positive and will definitely buy more from their shop also in the future. I highly recommend!

We had a Little Christmas meeting on Saturday 12th December. Lots of people, lots of dolls, lots of talking and nice time. For the first time ever I had a chance to meet Xaya from A Little Book of Bluefairies and see some of her lovely dolls. Enjoy the pictures!
There was no way I could´ve left them there and I grabbed them with me. The decorations are beautiful and perfect style for the greenhouse study. I tried it with the flooring and it looks even better than the previous window I had there and as a bonus, this new one is much lighter to handle and it is exactly as tall as the white one was. Wow what a coincidence! The only con is that it is narrower than the flooring so I have to add there a lengthening piece. I will paint it white and distress it a bit.

The other wall is also progressed with cutting on the upper corner and window opening, which is raw at the moment and waiting to be finished with Dremel. However, I have to straighten the upper arch of the window opening just for the reason that it´s easier to make the glass and the framing with straight lines than curved.
After Lyra joined the group, I have been on a quest on finding the
perfect eyes for her. I had already bought a pair of ED´s 12 mm Milky urethane eyes, but
as she arrived, I soon realized that they did not look good on her because of the wide iris. The iris covered almost the whole eye opening which
was not the impression I wanted for Lyra as she is a sharp and smart girl who is far from
that droopy-eyed, child-like appearance, so a new pair with more realistic iris
proportions was a must.

As I
scrolled the DOA and red many threads with pictures of different eye brands, I
came up with Captured In Glass. The eyes are hand made by a person called Lu, and while
they may not be as perfect and vivid as ED´s, there was one feature that made
me chose them: you can order custom iris sizes. Not many eye maker offers this
option and CIG´s prices are well worth the quality, starting as low as $ 8.38.
Special requests adds a few dollars more but even then they are very
affordable.

All of the
above eyes are 16 mm, round and with stems on the back. The colours are pretty accurate within the sales pictures on CIG´s website, only the ET24´s are almost black in colour and
to me they look more like the ET21´s. Also the irises are slightly smaller on
these than on the other eyes from this batch (shows on the pictures above).
There seems to be some subtle variations between all of these three pairs although
technically they all should be 16 mm. If you looked closely and compared
the two eyes side by side, the pupil on the other eye was off-centered but this was not very obvious with the bigger sized eyes, but the smaller the scale goes, the more noticeable the flaws come. That
is the nature of handmade items though, so just for a record for those who
investigate their items with a looking glass, these eyes are not for you.

My vision
for Lyra´s eyes were intensive amber brown. The E6 looked just the right colour but as I very much liked the look of the EN realistic eyes, I asked if
it was possible to make the E6 colour in the style of EN series with low dome, flat back and sized 12 mm with 5 mm irises. The answer was yes.

I was very excited when the package arrived but the surprise
was not a happy one: my eyes were not what I
asked for. Not that they would have been ugly or poorly made, but they were not the colour nor the size I ordered. This is what I got:

As you can see, the eyes I got were just plain yellow instead of amber. They had this nice iris pattern that EN style has, but it was so light that only the photo revealed it. With naked eye you barely noticed it. I guess the beautiful pattern stands out more on bigger eyes. I didn´t got the smaller iris either. I am not sure if she accidentally sent me a wrong pair or what, because I even sent her many illustrated pictures of the proportions for the eyes and examples of the colour just to make sure she´d understand. I had really high hopes for these eyes and immediately sent a reclamation about them. Lu answered very quickly, was deeply sorry, apologized for the disappointment and promised to make me a new pair. At that point I started to wonder if my request was just too difficult to execute/ understand and that maybe we were stumbled across a language barrier (and because of that, I do blame myself). I decided to ease off Lu´s task by asking if she could make me just the ordinary E6 but with smaller iris. I red between the lines that now she finally understood what I meant - and if I am not very wrong, I think I heard a relieved sigh from somewhere across the globe. Maybe she was just too polite to say no for my first request even though she didn`t quite get what I wanted? Anyhow, she also promised to give me an extra pair of eyes for free as a refund. Okay, so now I was relieved too and started the waiting again.

When the second delivery day came, I was even more excited than on the first time. Maybe I could finally have the eyes I had been waiting for so long? And yes, the new re-made eyes were perfect! On the picture below I put the first "wrong" pair in the middle for comparison, on the left are the extra refund eyes and on the right are The eyes for Lyra. You can see the difference between the colours of the middle and the right pair. The extra eyes I got are 12 mm and green, probably Y18 or Y45. Definitely a keeper for possible future characters and the yellow´s in the middle would be great for some animal-ish character (wolf/ bird/ etc.).
I didn`t have any nice shoes to go with those tip-toes, so I headed to eBay. I had red from DOA that some of the 22" American Model and resin Evangeline Chastly shoes fits Minifees nicely and the seller is paul_zhangby. There are lots of different brands on the seller´s store and some of them will probably fit other sized BJD´s as well even if they are not originally made for them.

I bought six pairs of shoes of which five of them are here:

The brown & pink flats on the left are for Lyra and they are YoSD sized. They fit her perfectly! The yellow boots on the middle are originally for Ellowyne/ Tonner/ Marley and the item description stated that they fit on most of the YoSD`s but unfortunately they are waaaay too small for Lyra. However, they are so detailed, cute and well made that I might just keep them as a prop on Lyra´s greenhouse study.
The browns, the greens and the pink boots are for Stella and fit well as I had red. I purchased the brown ones only because the back of them is black and since there wasn`t any black & white pumps that would have met my taste, I decided that I´ll cover the brown part with white or black paint - or if I dare - with turquoise! Actually I bought one turquoise pair, but few days after I had placed the whole order, I got a message that said they were some how damaged and could not be send. I got the refund but because those specific ones were the ones I wanted the most, I chose the second-best ones and took these violets instead:

These suit Stella´s pastel coloured style well too.

I am very pleased with my order and the whole transaction. All of the shoes are detailed, well made, the prices are super compared to the quality and the seller trustworthy. I highly recommend the seller to anyone who´s seeking for nice shoes for dolls.

Last, from a marketplace I found these pearly pink flat shoes with heart shaped rhinestone buckles:

I don`t know the brand (there was no mention about it) but they fit the Minifee flat feet like a glove! I just randomly bought them because they seemed to be the right size and luckily they turned out to be just that. I must take some pictures of all of the shoes on a doll but nowadays it gets so dark so early that taking photos is a bit of a pain. I really have to buy that light tent and some daylight lamps for sure.Rosie http://www.blogger.com/profile/06852654561098749885noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-125254971753993271.post-41726212043672121602015-10-26T16:37:00.003+02:002015-10-26T20:44:17.351+02:00Faceup for succubusMy friend ordered a new doll from Impldoll: the Loss Of Brilliant -series`s grey skinned Azalea. She wanted to shell a character of hers, which is a succubus but to save money, she ordered the doll blank. She bemoaned that her face painting skills were poor and she needed to find someone to do it for her. As I heard that, of course I wanted to help and offered to make it for her just to get more experience for myself.

As the succubus is a winged man-chasing female demon, my friend wanted the faceup to be strong, seductive and above all: have red lips. Here is what I achieved:

I put her super long eyelashes intentionally to highlight her femininity.

This was my first time ever to paint a grey resin but it was no harder than normal skin resin. For the first time I also used Army Painter as a sealant and to be honest, I do like Testors more. T gives better tooth for pastels to stick on but on the other hand, maybe it`s just because I haven`t used to AP. Anyhow, I´m sure I will get used to AP as soon as I get work with it more. I have one bottle of Testors still left but as it runs out, I have to start using AP instead since in Finland Testors is no longer available.

My friend liked the finished face-up and I was very happy to see her approval. I already took her another doll to my "spa" so more faceups to come later.Rosie http://www.blogger.com/profile/06852654561098749885noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-125254971753993271.post-23544129848665384992015-10-22T19:08:00.000+03:002015-10-26T15:01:45.221+02:00Too Spooky Halloween Monster Tag

There is a BJD tag going on in the blogs so I decided to join the fun! Let`s start:

Werewolf - How has the hobby "transformed" you?

I´d say the biggest transformation has happened to my general interest of dolls. Usually as a child, I wasn`t very fond of dolls but more of plushies and soft animal toys. Only dolls I liked were some barbies and some other cartoonish-/ fantasy type ones which had some magical elements like wings etc. But the day I saw my first pictures of BJD`s I immediately thought they were something unbelievable beautiful and so the seed was sown. After a few years I came across with BJD`s again realizing that these dolls actually existed and it was possible to buy them. The difference between Barbies was so big that I wanted to know more. The first doll meet I joined was the last seal for my decision to get a BJD.

Other major change has happened to my perspective towards money: now a doll with 300 $ price tag is considered as cheap, while back then I´d have been astonished and devastated. Not sure is that a good or a bad thing, though. ;) Also the hobby has given me a new channel to use my crafting skills.

Vampire - The dreaded sun! How do you feel about and cope with yellowing, or more generally the aging of these dolls?

I am not afraid of yellowing or aging. I do not expose my dolls on direct sunlight nor store them on their boxes or dark rooms either. Aging and changing of the colour is just the nature of resin and just like everything on this planet gets old, so does the dolls. In my mind these are items that must be seen and put on displays. I very much enjoy just to look at them even if I didn`t do anything else. To me, dolls are eye candy! If I paid 500 $ on a doll, only that is a reason big enough to look, play, and handle it like all the time, otherwise it would be a waste of money, wouldn`t it? I would never buy a doll just to bury it in the darkest corner of my house and dig it out just a few times of the year to quickly look at or to sew a dress. That is not who I am and how I act. Like old teddybears, also old and much-loved BJD´s are beautiful, yellowed or not.

Frankenstein`s Monster - Have you ever modded a doll? Tell us about it! If you could magically try any mod without fear of failure, what would you like to try?

I have done only one modding on my first doll, which was MSD sized Angelregion`s Littlefair Ren girl. Her nose and chin were very sharp and pointy, so I sanded them a little bit down to give her softer features. Other than that and seam sandings, I haven`t done more.

If I had the chance to make any kind of mod I desired, I´d like to do some sort of fantasy creature with big wings. Thing that I have been really thinking has been finding and hybriding heel feet for my Nekome. Older Delf bodies never came with the heel feet option but the new Senior Delf´s heel feet are interchangeable with their new Delf´s. However, since my Nekome is so old and yellowed already, the new resin would never match hers.

Zombie - Have you ever caught the Marketplace virus? Name some unplanned purchases that jumped out and "infected" you?

My second doll, which was LUTS´s Delf Soony, was sort of an unplanned purchase. I had craved for Soony since the first days of my BJD journey, but never before had money or courage to buy her (I was just a teenage back then). Then I saw her on sale at DOA and since the price was so good and I luckily had some spare money in my pockets, I decided to go for it. I justified my whim by referring it as a birthday present from me to myself.

Actually all of my dolls have been purchased without any specific or detailed background or thought. I have mainly just bought dolls that have been pleasing to my eye really.

Skeleton - What`s your favourite body sculpt? Forget heads!

This is a tough question because I have so little experience of different doll bodies. I like the look of the Fairyland´s and LUTS´s doll bodies and I love Atelier Momoni´s Nena body. It would be easier for me to say which bodies I do not like (aesthetically) but I´d need more real-life experience to tell what would be my ultimate favourite.

Witch - Name some dolls that are magical! Seeing them on your dashboard inspires you! Can be general sculpts or specific dolls owned by talented friends.

I love Unoa Lusis and once I had her, but sold very quickly due the need of money for other interests at that time. I probably will get her again sometimes and been lately thinking that repeatedly. I have always loved that face! There are so many talented hobbyists that I don`t want to point out any specific. Everybody has their own charm.

Ghost - The one that got away. Do any limited or rare dolls "haunt" you to this day?

The doll that I have always liked and wanted was the Angelregion Fair girl Diana. When I purchased the Little Fair Ren, I would have chosen Diana if I had the money. So, she haunts me every now and then, just like the Unoa Lusis does too. Luckily I have been safe from the bigger ghosts.

Freddy Krueger - What is your worst doll nightmare? Has it happened or not?

My worst nightmare have probably been something to do with shipping like where I get a package with completely distroyed doll etc. That has never happened - and hopefully will ever happen!

Jason Voorhees - If you were gonna make Halloween costumes for your dolls (or if you plan to!) what costumes would you make?

It´s a pitty we don`t celebrate Halloween here in Finland so I haven`t actually really thought about any costumes. But now when the cat´s on the table, I might want to do something to do with spiders. Not meaning just clothes with spider patterns but actually making a doll look (figuratively speaking) like the real insect. My vision is too complicated to describe, though.

Chucky (possessed doll) - Have you ever been scared of dolls or a certain doll? Be honest!

Yes, by Chucky himself. I was something like five when I saw the Child`s Play movie poster with Chucky on it and man that doll creeped the hell out of me! If I ever see that picture again, I still got the same horrible feeling that took me over then.
Same thing with antique dolls. To me, there is always something very disturbing about them. Maybe it´s their eyes which usually stares glazed to nowhere and they look like they had just seen a ghost. Old dolls are used so many times in horror movies so I tend to get a bit alert every time I see them.

Yay! I enjoyed the painting a lot and I think I managed to achieve the realistic deer look on her. I used pastels, watercolour pencils and acrylics. The pictures can speak to themselves:
I am still thinking should I add some eyelashes, though. Deers do have huge eyes and usually very long, black lashes so it might look good on her. Oh well, I can add them any time if I feel like it but that`ll do, at least for a while anyways.

PS. She is such a tricky poser! She tends to kick a lot so I have to study more about her anatomy. Maybe I´ll find some tips and tricks to get it easier.Rosie http://www.blogger.com/profile/06852654561098749885noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-125254971753993271.post-25246140667909959012015-10-06T14:52:00.000+03:002015-10-09T00:43:58.640+03:00Project Diorama: the flooringThe diorama is slowly progressing. After considering different flooring options from real mosaic, faux tiling made from egg cartons, painting marbling effects, etc. I decided to go the easy way and chose to checker the whole area with matt white and glossy grey paint. It was easy yes, but turned out very time consuming while painting the squares even (and my perfectionism didn`t help either, lol!).
I am pleased with the result. At first I was a bit skeptical about whether it would look cheap or too flat, but gladly it created a nice texture on the surface since the paints I used were quite thick. When the whole set is finished, I will batten the raw edges from both the floor and the wall so that they will be much neater.Rosie http://www.blogger.com/profile/06852654561098749885noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-125254971753993271.post-61882692796744127422015-10-05T17:33:00.000+03:002015-10-26T20:39:26.950+02:00Box opening: companion for LyraHello everybody!
Today I got the long waited package from mail. I usually consider about purchasing a doll quite a long time, but with this particular doll, I didn`t ponder too long. Especially when I got an e-mail from the artist herself where she asked was I still interested in pre-order one of her dolls, I just went with the flow. I had asked about the dolls from her earlier, so she knew I was interested in having one. As far as I remember it was June when I placed and paid the order and the waiting time was estimated to be three months, but the process time took a bit longer than what was expected. Anyhow, that was not surprise at all, as we all dolly enthusiasts well know. ;)

Can you guess from what company this doll is?
So the new little fawn is a Fanny from Nympheas Dolls and she will be as a companion for Lyra. There were three colours to choose from: chocolate, strawberry tan and butter. Mine is butter, since I felt it would be the most realistic looking and hence that, I wished for brown eyes. Isn`t she just darling? The little deer is so delicate and detailed. The artist - Sophie by name - apologized that the factory which does the casting is slow, but the resin quality is superb and I can do nothing but agree on that. Just lovely!

I have already decided her name and she will be Fauna. Next I`ll do the faceup and paint some flecks on her back. I am so excited about this new little creature, so more of her soon as I start the painting.
Of course a proper botanist has to have her own desk to keep all the important notes and writings in order, so I searched pictures of different desks and styles I liked and made a plan using Ana Whites tutorial. I had a lots of materials already on store so I didn`t have to buy anything. Here is a picture from the start:

As a tabletop I used a piece of veneer I found from trash and the pieces below are the sides and the back of the desk. Originally the legs were not wood carved but straight sticks which I shaped with Dremel to look like that. I also drilled holes on both to the legs and the tabletop, glued some barbeque sticks to the legs and with mortise joint attached the legs under the top. After the glue was dried I cut off the excess lenght of the sticks and sanded the area.
Unfortunately I have no pictures of the process of how I made the little drawers, but it was pretty much just measuring, sawing, sanding and gluing (thin veneer and wooden spatulas were used as a material). The drawers really works and they can be opened.

After lots of brainstorming, trials and errors the desk was up! The matchbox shows the scale:

Next I painted the whole thing with white furniture paint as a base colour.

Then I painted over the white with light grey which has a hint of green, something like Annie Sloan`s Duck Egg Blue. I didn`t have that colour ready and it was difficult to find that exactly right shade from ready mixed paints (and didn`t want to buy the Annie Sloan`s since they are so expensive!) so I had to mix it from some leftover white, grey and green paints from my earlier projects. I think the colour turned out well, although the picture shows it way too baby blue, which is far form the actual shade!

After the painting was done, started the distressing. First with rougher sandpaper and moving on to the finer until I was pleased with the result. Now you can see why I first painted the white under the grey paint:

Last it was time to make knobs for the drawers. My grandfather was a watchmaker when he was alive and I have saved lots of his stuff for cases like this and luckily, I found some nice little adjusting screws made of brass. The muted green-shaded-grey works extremely well with the brass knobs, don`t you think?

I added one more final touch by waxing the whole thing with beeswax creme. The finished size is : width 23,5 cm, depth 13,5 cm and height 17 cm.

OK, first goal achieved! Next I`ll probably make a matching chair to go with it. It could be something like this:

Picture from: boknas.fi

...but before that I have to build the frames of the whole diorama which I already have cut and painted. Just have to set them up, attach them together and do the flooring before I´ll continue with the furnishing and decorating.

Rosie http://www.blogger.com/profile/06852654561098749885noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-125254971753993271.post-50437523209581461162015-09-17T16:36:00.003+03:002015-11-29T00:29:05.094+02:00Project Diorama starts now!For a long time have I dreamed of building a diorama for my girls. The difficulty has been the size: Nekome is SD, Stella MSD, Mimi petite and the newest member Lyra is tiny. It´s impossible to create a set where each doll would look good and on scale, so, I decided to build only one diorama for one doll and arrange a nice shelf into my glass cabinet for the others. Since I have so inspiring background story for Lyra - and because she is the smallest human doll in size - I chose to build the set to match her world.

To tell you a little bit about Lyras background, she is a biologist, more closely a botanist. Her parents were biologists too and from them, she got the spark for natural history and science. The study stands on an old conservatory/ geenhouse, filled with old bottles with specimens inside them, plants and curiosities. The colour scheme is shabby chic, muted pastels and earthy tones. I haven`t determined the exact year of where the story takes place but perhaps something like 1920`s or so on. I am not very strict about the years but one thing I am: the scale of the diorama must be correct! (or at least as correct as possible)

Yeah, not letting myself easy on this, am I?

The free space was difficult to find due the size of the whole diorama but after looking, pondering and measuring I found a decent place to set it. In an ideal situation I´d have a whole room just for dolls but since that is not possible, I decided to make it on the top of my old oak drawer. It is a tad high for the purpose but otherwise works really well.

From the picture above, you can see an old window on the top of the drawer. That will be playing an important part for the whole set: it will be one of the diorama`s wall. I made a simple illustration of the construction to give a better picture of how it will look:

The floor and the left wall will be solid and the whole structure will be held together with angle irons. The left wall will get a window too but haven`t decided the shape and size yet. For the flooring on the other hand, I have been thinking of making some kind of tiling. Something resembling of worn-out bricks like you see in the real-life conservatories or maybe slate. Should the colour be terracotta, light sand, black slate or - my all time favourite - black & white like chess board? Oh, so many things to decide!

But anyways, that`s everything for now. Stay tuned for more to come!
